Bono - Person Of The Year

No lie, but I started typing "Twat" instead of "Person." I'm sure you've all heard by now that Time magazine has awarded the "Person of the Year" honors to three recipients: Bill & Melinda Gates and Bono. No, I'm not kidding. I know it's hard to believe...I suppose all three have actually done worthwhile things this past year, but how can you look past Gates' pact with the Devil (damn you, Microsoft) and Bono's...I don't know what. He's just so annoying lately. But well done, trying to save the world is far from the worst thing to do with your time and money.

And in other news, space cake Moby will be the first popstar in space (take that, Lance Bass!). Maybe he'll sing "We Are All Made of Stars" during liftoff?

Oh, and that nutjob running Iran has banned Western music. Was he picked on as a child? Was he rejected by the love of his life? First the Israel thing and now this. Someone needs a hug.

Bad Behavior

There is nothing hotter than a bad boy. Especially when they play in a band. However, sometimes the boys take this a bit too far.

Examine, if you will, one Pete Doherty. Ex of the Libertines, now in the shambolic Babyshambles. Pete is becoming better known for his drug-related exploits and famous ex-girlfriend than for his music. The latest chapter in Pete's destructive road show finds him under arrest. Again. For being under the influence. Again. It's really sad, because once you take away the narcotics and the booze he's a really talented artist. But the addict thing is wearing thin, and it's awful to watch someone who seems so hell-bent on destroying themselves. He's becoming another rock'n'roll cliche.

Pete's misbehaving predeccesor, Keith Richards, also knows a thing or two about drugs. All you have to do is look at pictures of him from around 1965 to now to witness the true havoc he has wreaked on himself. It seems that footage Richards' legendary near-death on stage due to electrocution is for sale. If you're feeling sinister, forget about the minister and head on over to It's Only Rock and Roll for information.

In other news, this weekend was most excellent. For those in the D.C. area who haven't yet seen Death by Sexy live, shame on you. Two boys making lots of noise (and let me not forget the feather boas) is a highly sexy thing. Make sure to see them. Soon.

Joy Division - ?

I am torn on how I feel about this...do I jump for joy at the thought of new Joy Division, or do I recoil in horror at the thought of anyone other than Ian Curtis at the helm? It's a tough call. I think that some bands just have frontpersons who are too irreplaceable (Queen, INXS) and their remaining band members shouldn't even try it without them. Just cut your losses and reap the royalties, and if you record new material don't use the bands' name. I love New Order, don't get me wrong. But something just feels wrong about this.

Oh, and I heard a while back Jude Law was being considered for the film role of Ian Curtis. I guess maybe that's changed...

Pitchfork is reporting that Britt Daniel, the absolutely dreamy Spoon frontman, has taped an episode of "Veronica Mars." Britt's episode will air on February 1st, and he'll be singing a cover of "Veronica." Pitchfork also reports that Britt has a girlfriend who lives in Portland. Alas.

Perhaps everyone already knows this (I'm a little behind the times every so often)...but according to Drowned in Sound, 1990s white boy hip hop outfit House of Pain just might honor us all with a reformation. Maybe the thinking is that getting back together can't be worse than their current jobs (Everlast's solo career, DJ Lethal in Limp Bizkit). Or maybe they just see dollar signs when they think of hocking their hit to a whole new generation of disgruntled youth. Go on, admit you loved "Jump Around." We all did...

The Living Things - Excellent.

Short and sweet. If you can get to see the Living Things do it. You will thank me. They are raucous and primping and posing and simply rad. My trip to Sonar this weekend was well worth it. I hadn't heard them before, and therefore had no expectations. They wowed the small crowd that turned up. And I'm not just saying this because I was mesmerized and mystified by Lillian's impressively snakey and shiny laceup boots...

John Lennon RIP - 25th Anniversary

Today I am certain there have been mass pilgrimages to spots like Strawberry Fields and the Dakota in NYC, as well as his former home in Liverpool. It's so hard to believe sometimes that Lennon was shot 25 years ago, as it doesn't feel like it could possibly have been so long ago. I was all of one and a half years old when he died. We'll never know, but sometimes I can't help but wonder what would have happen had he not been shot. Would the Beatles have ever gotten back together? I have to admit, most of me leans towards no.

If you get the A&E Biography channel, there's this great series called "Dead Famous," hosted by Scot Gail Porter. She and her partner in crime go all over the States looking for famous ghosts. The only reason I am mentioning this in a post about John Lennon is because they did an episode about him. Interesting stuff.

RIP John Lennon.

It will be weird seeing the Kicks without him. I've seen them umpteen times and it's gotten to be such a familiar, comfortable thing to see them all in their right places. It kind of rocked my world when they brought in the drummer and Nick stepped out into the frontman role. But as per usual, I have digressed.

Wow I have really been a bad blogger lately. No post this month...

So here's the deal. I've got a lot of stuff that's going on for the rest of this year and continuing to next year (and hopefully beyond). I'm going to be even busier than I have been the past few weeks...that being said, I'm also going to try and do a better job at updating more than once every five weeks or something. I'll do my damndest...

Sad news to report first I'm afraid. Matt Stinchcomb has left the French Kicks. This is a sad day indeed.

In better news, NME reports that you can take a listen (and a peek at the video for) a new Dirty Pretty Things song - "Bang Bang You're Dead" at the Dirty Pretty Things site. I've listened...and it pretty much sounds like old Libertines stuff. Hopefully Didz will make more of an impact on other material.

And finally, if you're in England on Thursday, make sure to catch the "secret" Razorlight show at the Railway Inn in Winchester. I would if I were there...

Kaiser Chiefs - Contagious!

Don't go near the Kaiser Chiefs if you value your health...they're contagious! They're so contagious that they've cancelled some Spanish dates. The illness is "rare," which makes me curious as to what the boys have contracted. I hope it's nothing like...avian flu...maybe they have typhoid? The plague? Whooping cough? Surely not. I'm just being silly. In any case, I can't imagine it's anything fun. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Chiefs.

Remy Zero - RIP

Yes yes I know it's been two weeks since I have posted. Shame on me. And regretfully, my comeback post is very bad news...

I have discovered today that one of my favorite bands, Remy Zero, have called it a day. It has brought a tear to my eye. Here is the official word from their site:

"The five of us thank all of you who have listened, & had faith in us. These years as Remy Zero have given birth to music and friendships that will hopefully live on past this moment. We will take the inspirations, lessons, and spirits we have encountered as each of us moves forward into new territories. Remy Zero has been put to rest. Thank you again. Peace. O, sad day indeed. If you don't have any Remy in your record collection, now is the time to look back and remember how good they were.

NIN/QOTSA/DFA1979

Wow. Maybe I am too easily impressed, but what a show...

I had never really considered myself a Nine Inch Nails fan before. Yeah, I liked a couple songs, but there are no NIN albums in my collection (something which will very soon change). But I am putting the cart before the horse...

First things first. After a hold-up at dinner (i.e. world's slowest server), we made it in time for two Death From Above 1979 songs. I would be sad about missing most of their half hour set, but one of the two songs was "Little Girl," which along with "Sexy Results" is my favorite thing about the DFA album. The boys looked great, and sounded even better. I can't wait until they release their next album and tour it around, hopefully stopping at the Black Cat on their North American jaunt.

Queens of the Stone Age were next. Christina and I were already swooning over Josh Homme (we like tall lanky redheads), and he and the rest of QOTSA did not disappoint. They were loud, they were powerful, they were pretty fucking good. I had hoped for "Feel-Good Hit of the Summer," but it's no longer summer and alas no song for me. Again, not a huge QOTSA fan, but I liked them more having seen them live. Some really bad pics will be posted later today (I wish I had one of those swanky palm pilot/sidekick thingies with good quality)...

And now for NIN. I was completely blown away. Not only is Trent Reznor effing hot (who else could possibly make a sleeveless top and leather pants look good?), but his voice is killer live. Very rarely have I heard such a voice -- he is a natural performer. Trent was even better than on cd. Maybe I'm just too used to fey indie boys with gentle, fragile vocal chords or something. The band were equally impressive, particularly the guitarist who was doing some sort of karate posing with his guitar. They were blindingly fabulous. The crowd was an interesting mix of frat boys, suburban goth kids, and people who looked like it was still 1994 in their heads. One of the best moments was the "lighter moment," picture coming soon. Never before have I seen so many lighters at one time. It was a lovely moment. Some pics posted here, more to come later...

SFA - Help!

I hate thieves. Especially when they target my favorite bands...the dear Super Furry Animals have been victimized. In this case, I suppose, it's possible that Gruff might have just misplaced the voicebox, but given the rash of thieves looking for band equipment this year...you never can tell.

Not much else seems to be going on. It's new release Tuesday, whee! And tomorrow night will be super exciting, as I was gifted with a ticket for the Nine Inch Nails show at the MCI Center. Is it wrong of me to say that I am most excited about seeing Death From Above 1979? Because I am. It should be most excellent...

However, I'd like to encourage my fellow drivers to boycott Exxon Mobil Corp., because they seem to be the biggest gainers when it comes to the ridiculous gas gauging this past year. In case you've been living under a rock, here's how their profits did this quarter (hint - it's in the billions)...I'm sure Bush is very proud that he's been able to help out his oil buddies so much!

Than a good old fashioned band battle royale. Seems the Arctic Monkeys don't like being compared to the Kaiser Chiefs...not that I've got anything to do with it, but after all the hype I heard before listening to Arctic Monkeys, they were a real letdown, and they should be happy to be compared to the Chiefs because the Chiefs I think are really good. Plus, what the hell kind of name is Artic Monkeys? Yeah, it's not a "The" name, but come on. How much dope were you on when you came up with that?

Yeah, it'd take a lot for me to be unbiased about this one.

Bad News...

So I've been home sick for the past two days, and what do I arrive back at work to find out?

Alfie (pictured here) are splitting up. This makes me very sad indeed. I've been an Alfie fan for years, and I think they've been unfairly overlooked among Brit imports. It made me sad to read over their statement, because it's true, in a way. You could apply that sentiment to any number of quality bands. When Ashlee Simpson can have two #1 albums, yet really good bands like Alfie (among countless others) split because there's seemingly no hope...it's just not right. I am tired of the masses buying the shit that Ashlee et. al. put out. It's not music...it's crap.

But now I shall step down from my soapbox. It's too early for a rant, and frankly I don't have the energy.

Ambulance LTD - Live

I saw something kinda special Saturday night. And no, I am actually not talking about Ambulance LTD. As much as I do love them, and granted I wasn't there for the whole set, but Ambulance LTD were not quite as fabulous as usual. I was, however, very impressed with We Are Scientists. I actually had a few songs on my ipod, and was a bit baffled by all the hype they've been getting lately. But upon seeing them live...they were scene stealers. The crowd was really into them, which in D.C. means that not as many people were talking over the opening band as usual. They were energetic and engaging, and hello the drummer is adorable. But aside from my little crush, I really do feel totally different about them than I did pre-Saturday night. For me the true test of a band's worthiness is how good they are live. And WAS passed my test with flying colors. I even got a (very cute) tee shirt, but missed out on the WAS condom giveaway. Ah well.

*Scottish wonders Sons & Daughters have had to cancel their Oct. 29th show with Broadcast in Portland due to "travelling restrictions." Not sure what that means, but there we have it.

*Goldfrapp are set to release the US version of their latest album, "Supernature," on March 7 of next year. While that is ages away, they are promising super special packaging...I hope that whatever they do will be worth the wait (and the savings for not buying the import). Bonus tracks would be well appreciated.

*NME is reporting that the new Babyshambles album has leaked. If anyone knows where it is, I'd be much obliged.

Clap Your Hands Say Awesome

I am a very happy girl this morning.

This is because I am still enthralled with the show I attended last night. Front row for the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah invasion of D.C. It was a fabulous evening...

The highlight of the night for me was the opening band, The Black Angels. I had heard of them, but never heard them. I loved them from the moment they walked onstage. And once they began to play it only got better. They are a great mix of the Dandy Warhols, Brian Jonestown Massacre, and a smidge of Clinic (just on the vocals, sometimes). I was in love.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah were just as good as expected. It was amusing because you could just tell that they are still getting used to the big crowds coming to see them. They need to work on their "banter," as they called it, but apart from that they sounded great. The vocals sounded even more like David Byrne live, but I think I am getting beyond comparing them to Talking Heads and am loving them for them. If you can get to see them live, I highly recommend it. I am even considering going up to Baltimore on a weeknight to see them again tonight. High praise, indeed.

Today is the day observing Christopher Columbus and his jaunts over to this side of the Atlantic, spreading disease and Olde Worlde charm wherever he went. Some people are at home, sleeping in this morning and enjoying hangovers incurred celebrating an unusual Sunday night out. I am not one of those people. Unfortunately I am sitting at my desk, trying to stay awake. But enough about me and Mr. Columbus. Here's some news...

Elton John thinks Pete Doherty needs a hug. Enough snickering, he's serious. I think he needs some good old fashioned tough love in the form of a good swift kick in the ass and some time in a lock-down rehab facility, but what do I know?

iPod - In The Car!

Last night I ventured over to Best Buy on a whim and decided to get myself a way to listen to my iPod in the car. My cd player is straight ghetto and only works when it feels like it, and I would rather have my eardrums eaten by wild beasts than listen to the radio around here. So that left me with no alternative. I ended up procuring one of the AirPlay FM transmitter/charger thingies. It is making me pretty happy. The most time-consuming thing about it was opening the packaging. It's self-explanatory and after the search for a station it works well. I happily shuffled my way to work this morning. If you're in the market, you could do a lot worse.

Pete Doherty just doesn't like anyone, it seems. His latest spat is with Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell...I'd pay good money to have seen that headbutt. I worry about Pete, but I do kind of think it's good for rock'n'roll to have some conflict. It adds to the mystique. But then again, Pete is walking a very fine line between badass and just ass.

What's next? "Team Pete" and "Team Johnny" teeshirts? Hmm. Maybe I should get on that...

Nada Surf - Black Cat

I was exhausted. I was drained. I was almost catatonic. But dammit, I made it out to the Black Cat to see Nada Surf, and I am so glad I did. Despite sound that wasn't the best I've ever heard, the eight songs I was able to keep my eyelids open for were beautiful. An added bonus was that six of them were off the "Let Go" album (see previous post). I could listen to them play those songs all day. The Cat was pretty busy for a Tuesday night, and I'm glad to relay that most people stuck around after Army of Me and Say Hi to Your Mom. Last time the Nada Surf train rolled through town, the place kind of cleared out before they even went onstage. They don't know what they missed.

There are good bands, there are bad bands, and then there are those bands who are so good they make the otherwise good bands look like seven shades of shit. The Rolling Stones are of this latter category. They are, without question, the best live band I have ever seen, and am likely to see. I was a bit skeptical going in, but oh mercy was I shown what for. You can't argue with those songs anyway, but when they're done live with the full energy of the band and the undivided attention of tens of thousands of fans, there's just nothing else like it. They began with a rollicking "Start Me Up" and didn't let up until the closing strains of "Jumpin' Jack Flash" almost two hours later. Mick Jagger is a consumate showman, and he was surrounded by a band of more than able musicians. I sit here firmly convinced that the Stones are the greatest live band on the planet. Well worth the exorbitant price of admission. And the dancing 40somethings were an added entertainment bonus...

The picture was taken with my phone, hence the crappy quality. I had an amazing seat, and the Stones were much bigger than ants. Especially when the platform stage slid across the MCI Center and was closer to me. They were at least kitten size at that point. But the big screen helped...

Oh, and Ronny Wood is still pretty hot. And a quote from Keith Richards: "It's nice to be back in Washington. (pause) It's nice to be anywhere."

I Can't Get No...

After a sweltering RFK swansong yesterday afternoon (Go Nats), tonight I venture forth to the air-conditioned goodness of the MCI Center to finally experience the live show of those legendary lotharios, the Rolling Stones. I couldn't be more excited (even though I am subdued thanks to too much sun and too much dehydration from too much drinking the night before). I am just tickled pink to be able to go to the show tonight. It's not everyday a girl gets to be in the presence of rock royalty. Maybe I'll even get to see them. I'm not sure where the seats are, but I am hoping that Jagger and his band of merry men will seem larger than ant-size from where I'm sitting.

And now, for something completely different...you've got just a few more hours to bid on this ottoman designed by Todd Oldham and Joan Jett. Proceeds go to the Red Cross, and will help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The current price is over $1500.

BRMC - Howl

Finally, after two years of waiting, it happened. I was at the 9:30 Club, along with several hundred other folks, watching Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. And to be honest, I wish I had seen them two years ago as opposed to now. Not that they were bad, mind. The older stuff, from the BRMC album, sounded fantastic. I heard "Love Burns" and "Spread Your Love," so really I shouldn't complain. But I am still not sold on the new material, and because I love the old stuff so much I wish I had seen them back when they were touring that, instead of the new record. It's a little too...gospel-ish or something for my taste. I heard someone say they were trying to get too "Dylan," and maybe that's a good description. If it was the first I was hearing of BRMC, I might feel differently. But I do love my J&MC-influenced music, so there we are. It was a good show, last night, but I wish they would have ixnayed on a few new songs and played "Awake" and "Red Eyes and Tears" and "Rifles" instead. Ah well. A girl can't have it all.

iPod Nano - Recalled

Just an FYI, but if you actually bought one of those iPod Nano things, you best take a look and see if yours is from the faulty batch...because if it is, Apple will replace it. I don't really know why people would buy one. Perhaps that's just me. I think iPods are perfectly dandy. I know that if I had a Nano I would lose it in about ten seconds. Maybe if it held as much music as my dear Sergio does, but the music storage hardly justifies the risk. I'll stick with the standard iPod, thanks.

So I've been silent for a few days...my apologies. I'm actually having fun with this thing, and I'll try to keep it more regularly updated.

Going to see Black Rebel Motorcycle Club tonight, and darned if I'm not excited. Last time I was supposed to see them, back in 2003, a little thing called Hurricane Isabel kept me at home in Virginia, away from the State of Emergency in D.C. (and yet, the show went on). So two years later, I am well and truly looking forward to those skinny boys in black.

UK drama club presidents British Sea Power have announced a short string of tour dates as openers for current Top 40 alt-pop kings the Killers. British Sea Power continue to support their sophomore album Open Season, released last Spring, while Brandon Flowers and co. recently issued an expanded U.S. edition of their best-selling debut LP Hot Fuss.
The bands will kick off the brief outing at the end of this month, with stops at the Across the Narrows and Download festivals. Fruit Bats - Fantastic

So, there ended up being no news yesterday.

But here's some!!! The Fruit Bats are phenomenal. Seriously. I fell in love the second they stepped on stage. More than just a crush on the lead singer, this was sheer love of good music. Cute, well-constructed pop heaven. I couldn't manage to stay awake for Rogue Wave, but I am very glad to have caught all of the Fruit Bats. Should you be able, I couldn't recommend enough that you get your ass to see them live.

Three shows in three days used to be no big thing, but now that I am a working stiff it becomes more and more of a drain. But it's nice every once in a while.

Another Monday morning comes...

This weekend was gig-tacular. Saturday night the journey up into Maryland was well-rewarded, as Doves put on perhaps the best show of theirs I've seen to date. Kudos to the boys for playing my be all and end all Doves track, The Cedar Room, which is the song that hooked me on them many years ago (can it really be five years already?! Good heavens). The crowd at Sonar was really into the show, and the band seemed to be into it, too. All around spectacular evening. Last night I returned to my own friendly confines of the Black Cat for some hot Swedish action, in the form of Dungen. I had high hopes, as I really like the album, and at first my hopes were justified. But a jam-band vibe infected the band, and they became almost unbearable. For me, anyway. So I left after about six songs, a little disappointed to be honest. But I still love the latest album. Tonight I must decide if I am awake enough for Rogue Wave and the Fruit Bats tonight. I am thinking I might have to sally forth.

It's not really a surprise that Gary and Anthony are in the band, but I've just picked up my jaw from the floor upon reading that Didz Cooper Temple Clause has left said Clause and is now bandmates with Carl! Didz is a fabulous musician, so any band with him in it will surely benefit. I look forward to hearing what this as of yet unnamed band can come up with.

Idlewild - Still Awesome

So last night yours truly went to see Idlewild at the Black Cat, along with a couple hundred other souls. It was my third Idlewild live experience. Though the audience was shamefully small, the band were stunningly wonderful. I feel rather lucky to have seen Idlewild in a space like the Black Cat. I hadn't been totally sold on the new material, but after having heard it live I am now a fan of even the most recent stuff. They were raucous and beautiful and melodic all at the same time. They were just about perfect, and really the only points I can deduct are for Roddy's interesting 'do - the 80s sort-of mullet thing. Not a good look. But apart from the hair trauma, they were incredible. If you can get out to see Idlewild, especially in a smallish venue, do it!!! They will rock your world. And maybe even try (admirably) to hustle you at pool. If I remember, I'll post the setlist tomorrow.

Reports of people selling internal organs to afford tickets are unconfirmed. I'll personally be seeing the "We Need More $$$ Really We Do" tour when it rolls into D.C. at the MCI Center in October. It'll be exciting to see such a venerable and long-lasting rock band. However, I am always reminded of the hypocrisy of Jagger when I think of his statement many moons ago about not wanting to be in a band when he was in his 50s...

Just a quick observation, as I attempt to cool off after many sweaty hours of dancing at the Black Cat: I love Death From Above 1979. You should love them, too. They have made what could very well be my favorite record of the year. In fact, I'll go out on a limb and say that it is in fact my album of 2005 thus far. Saw both these lovely bands last night at the Velvet Lounge. So worth the $10 admission!! I wish I had had extra cash with me so I could snap up both of their albums. I highly recommend checking these bands out if they're coming to a city near you.

Hopewell are also looking for street team members, so if you see 'em and love them and want to help out, let them know! I hear there's goodies involved.

Don't you hate it when a band comes to town that you've been dying to see the one weekend you won't be there to see them? Yeah, me too. Snowden, take note. It's all fine and good that you're playing the Black Cat on Saturday, August 27th. But it would be nicer if I wasn't going to be at the beach and could see you. Hmph. I suppose this means you'll just have to come back in a few months. For all those lucky enough to be in town, go see Snowden. You can thank me later.
